Here's my concept of eventual plans how would look Versus Mode in PvZ2.

First of all, you start along with your buddy in the game mode selection screen. You have three gamemodes

there:

- Time Battle

Plant side gets every plant unlocked in X world and zombie side gets every zombie encountered in that time period. NOTE: In worlds that doesn't unlock you any sun-producing plants, you always go with Sunflower. In case of Ancient Egypt you get Twin Sunflower, in Dark Ages you get Sun-shroom, etc.

- Random Battle

Everything got mixed up! Both sides get completely random plants and zombies! NOTE: In case of plants side, the game won't give you two sun-producing plants and in case of zombies, you won't get two the same functioning zombies but from two different time periods.

- Custom Battle

Both sides can choose their own setups with plants and zombies, simple enough. There are no limits, both sides can choose any plant and zombie, even if their setup will be totally worthless. The only exception is you can't choose Zombots because of the obvious reasons.

Here's everything worth knowing about zombie side and how to play it:

Explorer Zombie 125 brains Fast Creates a temporary huge flame that burns plants in 3x3 area. Lasts for 3 seconds. -
Tomb Raiser Zombie 225 brains Mediocre Throws two bones immediately Gravestones spawned also give out brains
Pharaoh Zombie 325 brains Slow Restores his sarcophagus -
Egyptian Flag Zombie 0/250/500/1000/2000/4000/8000 brains Very Slow Calls out a Sandstorm once again Calls out a Sandstorm once spawned. Each succesful spawn calls out a bigger and bigger ambush.
Swashbuckler Zombie 125 brains Fast Refills health and calls two more swashbucklers -
Seagull Zombie 125 brains Very Fast Refills health and makes every other near seagull invicible for 3 seconds. -
Barrel Roller Zombie 350 brains Sluggish Rolls out his barrel on nearest plant and breaks Imps out. -
Pirate Captain Zombie 200 brains Mediocre Calls out two more parrots to steal plants -
Imp Cannon 400 brains Slow Showers your lawn wih Imps. -
