Hey guys! Well, we're back to Modern Day. Seems like only yesterday I was talking about the potions level from the Dark Ages. We've been through a lot together, haven't we? We've seen the awe of Frostbite Caves Part 1, and the terror of Big Wave Beach Part 2. So, how does Modern Day stack up? Well, it.... kinda varies from level to level, actually.

Tecku Talks: Modern Day Part 1 First Impressions

Plants

  • Moonflower

Let me start by saying this: the idea of the darkness plants is brilliant. Plants that interact with one another is a sorely untapped idea pool, and Moonflower really does it well. Now, I haven't had enough experience to tell you whether Moonflower or Primal Sunflower is better, but since this is first impressions, I say Moonflower. It does seem pretty OP- you can reach the Sun cap easily even without other darkness plants.

  • Nightshade

Nightshade is a really unique plant, but I'm not really sure how to use him properly. I mean, he's a cheaper, stronger Peashooter when powered up, but then there's his strong attack at close range. Peashooters aren't really all that great, but maybe he's like Guacodile, where he can deal with zombies that get into your defenses? He's not a bad plant. I just feel unsure on how to use him best.

  • Shadow Shroom

His plant food is really OP. Other than that, great plant. I've had difficulty getting him to poison other zombies, but Hurrikale/Chard Guard/Primal Peashooter might fix that....

  • Shrinking Violet

Now, when I first heard about Shrinking Violet, my eyes rolled. A plant that slows zombies but doesn't damage them? Wow. Never. seen. that. before. However, Shrinking Violet did have a few tricks to surprise me. Eliminating Imps isn't something I've seen before, and that fact that the zombies stay small actually makes it pretty unique. I didn't buy it, but I didn't have any qualms with it.... until Modern Day Level 4 (see below)

Zombies

  • Newspaper Zombie

Newspaper Zombie is pretty good here. His fast diet can be countered with Endurian, and pretty much any instant plant will do him in. He does demand your attention, however, which is what a specialty zombie should do. Certainly better than just another zombie with 'machined' health.

  • Balloon Zombie

Uh... he was... okay, I guess? I barely remember this guy. I remember that he can recover from Thyme Warp really fast, and that's it. So let me check.... and.... he's only in two levels. Right. (It is nice to see they changed his gimmick at least)

Levels

  • Level 1

You pretty much need Hurrikale or Chard Guard for this. Seriously, for an introduction, that's way too close to the house. The zombies coming through the rift are spaced out so Hurrikale or Chard Gaurd can more than handle it, and it is pretty fun if you are using one of those plants, but it is really too close.

  • Level 2

I really do recommend Primal PM and Hurrikale. Considering the source, the BWB portals are actually okay.

  • Level 4

.................... Are you kidding me? No really, are you kidding me? Did you guys build this level to try and force people to buy Shrinking Violet? Well, it didn't work- I beat it via Primal PM (and Puff Shroom might work too), but wow. This isn't just a uniquely designed level where SV would be handy- it seriously feels like you're trying to push SV on us by making level we have to use it on. It may not be a super hard level, but it legitimately feels insulting.

  • Levels 6-7

Really guys? You included Jester in these levels without telling the player when they pick their seeds? See, not only is Jester immune to 90% on non-instant plant, but Jester also punishes you for using other plants. You don't include this thing without making it clear to the player.

  • Level 9

This is the level that made me feel like I didn't know what I was doing with Nightshade. It don't know how to describe it- does anyone else have this feeling?

  • Level 16

This level is actually pretty neat. Putting out your strongest plants against the Gargs is an unique experience outside of endless zones. It does seem that you have to use the plants just the way the developer wants you to, though. Use Primal PM on the Egyptian, Cherry Bomb on the Wild Westerners, blast Imps with Coconut Cannon, use Citron on the Jurassic variant, Intesive Carrot to get back the Winter Melons Garg Prime blasts, and get rid of Hair Metal Garg ASAP.
