It is based on a pumpkin, a round vegetable with smooth, slightly ribbed skin, and deep yellow to orange coloration.
Its name is a combination of "smashing," referring to the way it attacks, and "pumpkin," the real-life plant this is based on. It could quite possibly also be a reference to an American alternate rock band with a very similar name.

Strategies
With
Compared to other 6-sun cost plants, Smashing Pumpkin has no traits nor abilities, but makes up with sheer strength. The player may mass up more sun to play and spam Smashing Pumpkins more quickly.
Unfortunately, Smashing Pumpkin does not benefit from any synergy cards due to its tribe, which means that Smashing Pumpkin is on its own when facing zombies. Smashing Pumpkin also faces severe competition against Three-Headed Chomper, Super-Phat Beets, and Tough Beets, which almost always outperform it at the same sun cost.
Against
Smashing Pumpkin hits very hard and is quite bulky, destroying or heavily damaging you or your zombies. It is best to destroy it with a trick like Rocket Science, Cut Down to Size, Locust Swarm, B-flat, or Deadly zombies. You can also make zombies with 5 or more strength do a bonus attack.

Trivia
It is the fifth plant based on the pumpkin in the series, the first being Pumpkin, the second being Saucer, the third being Jack O' Lantern, and the fourth being Pumpkin Witch.
It is the only one of these plants to be introduced in Plants vs. Zombies Heroes.
It and Jack O' Lantern are the only ones to appear in the aforementioned game.
Its description mentions Template:PvZHLink.
It jokes about there always being an undercurrent of competition between them, because both smash and squash zombies.
After update 1.14.13, it is the most expensive Basic - Common card.
