Poppin' Poppies can be used as a defensive plant, especially against high damaging zombies, since they will expedite a lot of damage. You can use this very aggressively with Spudow since you can use this with Berry Angry to boost this plant and the Lil' Buddies she makes. Playing Spineapple after this plant is also a good idea to make the Lil' Buddies stronger. Note that if you are Spudow, you must plant Spineapple before using Berry Angry, because if you use Berry Angry first, Spineapple will not give strength to the Lil' Buddies.
Three-Nut can also be used to similar effect, starting off all Lil' Buddies with 3, protecting them from cards like Weed Spray and allowing for a stronger offensive element. However, this will decrease Poppin Poppies' damage output by 1.
Playing Steel Magnolia in a lane adjacent to Lil' Buddies will allow Lil' Buddies to withstand more damage. Using Rescue Radish with Citron to Bounce this plant to make more Lil' Buddies which will heal you even more can also be a good idea, healing for 12 health at most total. If you are playing as Wall-Knight, Briar Rose can be used after Poppin' Poppies is played, which will instantly destroy any zombie that hurts the Lil' Buddies, as they are also flowers. Pairing this with a Power Flower when the lanes are empty of zombies can heal the hero for a maximum of 10 health, which is half of their max health, giving you the ability to cheat death or ignore hard hitters.
Do not play Poppin' Poppies if an adjacent lane has a Vimpire and nothing is there to destroy him, as he will easily boost himself by destroying the Lil' Buddy and attack the hero with additional strength.
You can also play environments to benefit Poppin' Poppies even more, like The Red Plant-It to make her and the Lil' Buddies get a huge boost. Force Field can allow at least one Lil' Buddy to be invulnerable, which creates a decoy. Mushroom Grotto can allow you to make additional Puff-Shrooms to fully defend most lanes for just 1 card on turn 6 or later.
As of update 1.16.10, the Lil' Buddies made by Poppin' Poppies now heal your hero for 2 health each. This can allow you to survive longer if your hero is low on health, especially since your hero can be healed for 6 health. However, this means that playing Poppin Poppies next to aquatic lanes or having only one lane next door will reduce the amount of health healed. You can also team this up with Heartichoke to do 6 damage to the zombie hero right away, or with Pepper M.D. to boost it. However, these combos are unfortunately only normally possible with Wall-Knight.
It is recommended to use zombies with Frenzy or Strikethrough, especially Vimpire, since he will get increased strength and health from destroying the Lil' Buddies. Hot Dog Imp paired with a Toxic Waste Imp works well, as he will destroy all plants in the entire lane, destroying both the Lil' Buddy and the plant behind it, although the Hot Dog Imp will probably be destroyed in the process. You can also use The Chickening to destroy all Lil' Buddies and leave Poppin' Poppies at 2 health, which allows a simple zombie with 2 to destroy it. Weed Spray can also be used to great effect. Zombot Stomp can be used if it causes too much trouble, but beware since the Lil' Buddies will end up in your opponent's hand. As for Poppin' Poppies herself, tricks like Rocket Science, Cakesplosion, Locust Swarm, or Cut Down to Size are effective against her.
Do not Bounce Poppin' Poppies unless she is causing major trouble, as it will allow your opponent to make more Lil' Buddies, resulting in more obstacles for you to break through and your opponent healing off lots of health.
If you see environments such as The Red Plant-It or Mushroom Grotto, be careful as these environments can benefit this plant very easily. In that case, try to remove most of the plant environments before Poppin' Poppies is played.
