Melon-pult is a recurring character within the Plants vs. Zombies franchise. Melon-pult lobs hard hitting melons that deal heavy damage to the targeted zombie and heavy splash to those around the target, and due to lobbing, also avoid zombie shields.

Melon-pult is the middle child of the Pult brothers, as confirmed in Plants vs. Zombies 2, being older than Cabbage-pult and younger than Kernel-pult. He is also arguably the more powerful of the three, and as such typically has a higher sun cost and is usually the last of the brothers to be obtained by the player in most games.

As of Plants vs. Zombies 3, Melon-pult has appeared in five games.

Origins[]

Watermelongrowing

Both Melon-pult's shape and projectile are based on the watermelon (Citrullus lanatus), a type of melon from Africa.

Its name is a combination of "melon"; and "catapult", a ballistic device used to hurl larges stones for warfare purpose in ancient times.

History[]

Plants vs. Zombies[]

Melon-pult1

In the original Plants vs. Zombies game, as well as all Chinese spin-off games based on it, Melon-pult is the last plant obtained in Adventure Mode. He costs 300 sun and attacks by lobbing hard heavy melons that deal splash damage in a 3x3 area.

Melon-pult appears alongside his brothers as the main offenses against Dr. Zomboss in the final Adventure Mode level and the the final mini-game.

Winter Melon1

Melon-pult can be upgraded into Winter Melon, costing $10,000 to obtain at Crazy Dave's Twiddydinkies and 200 sun to plant, making Winter Melon effectively cost 500 sun.

His attack speed and damage are the exact same as Melon-pult, except his melons also slow zombies down like Snow Pea.

Plants vs. Zombies 2[]

Melon-pult2

Melon-pult returns in Plants vs. Zombies 2, unlocked after beating the 12th day of the Wild West. Like the first game, he lobs hard hitting melons, dealing splash damage in a 3x3 area, but his melons now deal 14 more splash damage than they did in the first game.

In return however, his sun cost got swapped with Threepeater's, costing 325 sun. His Plant Food ability has him launch melons at every zombie on the screen, each melon dealing 200 damage on the initial hit with an extra 20 splash, making it an effective screen clear.

Winter Melon, like most other returning upgrade plants, is now his own separate plant, costing 500 sun to plant, the cost of their Plants vs. Zombies cost combined with Melon-pult's and receiving the same buffs Melon-pult got. Due to Winter Melon's slowing ability, while Melon-pult is a member of the Arma-mint family, Winter Melon is a member of the Winter-mint family.

Melon-pult's next appearance was in the Chinese-exclusive turn-based game Plants vs. Zombies: All Stars as the second plant in the Watermelon line, evolving from Melon Slice-pult and evolving into Winter Melon. Melon-pult, like in the mainline games, attacked by lobbing melons at zombies.

His active ability was Melon Scatter, which dealt damage to three random enemies. His passive ability was Cooling Down, which lets Melon Scatter deal more damage and slowed hit enemies down.

His soulmates were members of the Corn line for a critical chance boost, and members of the Nut line or members of the Doom line and Tree line combined for a damage boost.

Plants vs. Zombies Heroes[]

Melon-Pult reappears in the turn-based mobile card game Plants vs. Zombies Heroes, ironically a set later than Winter Melon. Melon-Pult is a Galactic Rare Fruit Plant in the PvZH Smarty IconSmarty class costing 5SunPvZH and has 3StrengthPvZH/4HeartPvZH.

He has Splash Damage 3, which allows him to deal three damage in the two lanes adjacent to the lane he attacks in, regardless of how much strength he has.

Melon-Pult acts identically to the Snapdragon, with the only differences being his tribing, costing 1 extra sun, and having 1 extra health.

Plants vs. Zombies 3[]

Melon-Pult appears in Plants vs. Zombies 3, reprising the role of a high costing but heavy hitting lobber. He is a Common Lobber who costs 10 sun and initially deals 120 damage per melon and 30 splash damage (or 25% of the main damage.) Melon-Pult, like any plant in the game, can be upgraded to deal more initial and splash damage.

Winter Melon also reappears as an upgrade exclusive to Melon-Pult, being available when Melon-Pult is upgraded with a taco, he retains the ability to slow zombies down but now has the added chance to freeze them solid.

His seed packets are more likely to be dropped in BBQ Beach breakout battles.

Talkweb mini-games[]

In Plants vs. Zombies 2: Summon, Melon-pult is the 20th plant to be unlocked. It has a 16% chance of dealing double damage to its target, having 4393K points of damage.

In Plants vs. Zombies 2: League, it is a level 10 Turret class plant, having 848 points of health, 141 for damage and 200 for range. It also has 3 upgraded variations, namely Guy Melon, Musician Melon and Soldier Melon. After upgrading Soldier Melon, it becomes Melo-pult which has 3 more variations, being Guy Melo, Musician Melo and Soldier Melo. In later versions, Melo-pult and its variants are replaced with Rafflesia, Primal Refflesia and other variants.
