The Sonic Grenade is a grenade that, when thrown, will stun plants in a small radius for a short time and forces BurrowingChompers out from the ground.
An alternate ability of the Sonic Grenade, the Proximity Sonic Mine is a landmine which can stun plants for about five seconds when they come close to it. It makes Chompers come out of their Burrow ability if they are using it. This can be very useful for defending a teleporter or trying to escape from plants.
The Jackhammer allows for quicker movement but at the cost at not being able to use your other abilities, though you can still fire your primary weapon, and if you bump into a plant, the plant will suffer knockback and light damage.
An alternate ability of the Jackhammer, the Turbo Jackhammer functions the same as the Jackhammer except that it travels faster, but lasts for a shorter amount of time.

Weapon upgrades - GW1[]
Better Air Compression[]
Better air compression releases tension in the reload thingy... Whatever, it's just faster.
More Nuts & Bolts[]
Added some extra Nuts & Bolts from around town to increase ammo capacity.
Harder Nuts & Bolts[]
Nuts & Bolts are harder causing more damage. How they got harder we don't exactly know.
Strategies[]
With[]
The Mechanic's Air Gun is fully automatic, making him ideal for players who either struggle to land their shots or are otherwise more comfortable with automatic weapons. The Air Gun has three advantages over the Concrete Launcher; it has a longer range and its shots travel straight forward, allowing you to attack enemies from long distances without the need to angle your shots. Second, it allows you to protect the teleporter from its main threat, Corn Strikes, by shooting down Garlic Drones before they attack, without giving them much chance at dodging your shots. Destroying the Garlic Drones allow you to deny the plants from attacking the teleporter without actively assaulting it. Third, his weapon has a faster rate of fire. However, bear in mind that the Mechanic has a significant downside: recoil. His shots have recoil that almost match an Imp's, so remember to aim accordingly and consider the recoil.
Against[]
The Mechanic can be an absolute pain for Plants because of his weapon's longer range and straightforward shots. Although he has the highest rate of fire of all the Engineer variants, use the Future Cactus, Sun Pharaoh, or Plasma Pea to vanquish him quickly.

Trivia[]
His name is Al, as shown by his name tag.
This means that his name is "Mechanic Al", a pun on the word "mechanical."
He is one of the only four Engineers to have an actual name, the others being Engineer, AC Perry, and the Plumber, whose names are Gene, Perry, and Bob, respectively.
He wears a racing toolbox as a hat, a real mechanic's shirt, and his weapon has a racing flag. It is the reason why this variant is racing-themed.
In Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare, the Mechanic has a mustache. It was removed in Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2, much like most of the Engineer variants' facial hair.
The Landscaper is the only Engineer variant to keep his facial hair in Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2.
