HD Gloom Shroom

Gloom-shroom is a recurring character within the Plants vs. Zombies franchise. Gloom-shroom is a purple mushroom which attacks zombies in adjacent lanes by releasing spores.

As of Plants vs. Zombies 3, Gloom-shroom has appeared in three games, with three similar plants appearing throughout the series.

Origins[]

CortinariusArcheri

The exact mushroom Gloom-shroom is based on is never explicitly stated, however (like its downgrade Fume-shroom) it does heavily resemble the emperor webcap (Cortinarius archeri), a species of mushroom with bright purple caps that glisten with slime in the genus Cortinarius native to the eucalyptus forests of Australia in autumn.

Its name refers to several definitions of the word "gloom" such as the expression on its face and how it shoots purple fumes in all directions that passes through zombies, and it is a mushroom.

History[]

Plants vs. Zombies[]

Gloom-shroom1

In the original Plants vs. Zombies game, as well as all Chinese spin-off games based on it, Gloom-shroom appears as a purchasable Plant from Crazy Dave's Twiddydinkies for $7500.

Gloom-shroom serves as an upgrade to Fume-shroom which changes its range from a 1x4 area to a 3x3 area, dealing heavy damage towards any zombie it hits.

Plants vs. Zombies 2[]

Phat Beet2

Gloom-shroom doesn't make an appearance in Plants vs. Zombies 2, but a plant with a similar ability, Phat Beet makes an appearance instead, unlocked after beating Neon Mixtape Tour - Day 1 that does damage in a 3x3 area.

They cost the same amount of sun and deals 15 damage per shot, with a chance to land a critical hit between its fourth and sixth attack that deals 45 damage. Its Plant Food makes it deal 400 damage to all zombies in a 3x3 area and 200 damage to all zombies in a 5x5 area.

They are a member of the Enforce-mint family, who lets them deal 90 damage for their attack (270 damage for their critical hit), along with their Plant Food damage being increased to 1600 damage in a 3x3 area and 800 damage in a 5x5 area.

There also exist 2 other plants with the same attack method.

Kiwibeast2

First is Kiwibeast, who attacks in a 3x3 area with a chance to inflict knockback and grows when zombies attack it, letting it deal more damage. It also acts as a wall plant due to being able to withstand 2000 damage before being destroyed. It costs 25 more Sun than Phat Beet and has a 15 second recharge.

Gloom Vine2

The second plant is Gloom Vine, a vine plant that can power any Shadow plants planted inside of it. Unlike Phat Beet and Kiwibeast, he is instead part of the Conceal-mint family. It costs 25 sun less than Phat Beet and has the same recharge.

Plants vs. Zombies Online (China only) (Archived content)[]

DandelionO

Similar to Plants vs. Zombies 2, while Gloom-shroom doesn't appear themself, a plant with a similar ability appeared instead, in this case, Dandelion, unlocked after beating Level 3-1 of the Qin Shi Huang Mausoleum.

Like Gloom-shroom, they dealt heavy damage (50 damage per attack) in a 3x3 area when a zombie entered their range and when given Plant Food, they unleashed a heavy-damaging attack in a 5x5 area.

Their upgrades increased their health by 10%, their attack speed by 4% and their damage by 3%, and their last upgrade gave them a low chance of activating their Plant Food once planted.

Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2[]

While Gloom-shroom themself doesn't appear in Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2, the similarly designed and named Toxic Gloom-shroom made an appearance. He is a Rare Potted Plant which attacks zombies by spraying a burst of toxic gas around him, dealing 20 damage and poisoning any zombie it hits.

Gloom-shroom was originally going to appear instead of Toxic Gloom-shroom, with a beta icon remaining in the game showing their design rather than Toxic Gloom-shroom, though it isn't known why the change was made.

He costs 5SunPvZH, has 5StrengthPvZH/5HeartPvZH stats and PvZH Truestrike IconBullseye. If evolved on a Mushroom, he will deal 3 damage to zombies in his lane and next door when first played.

After being replaced by a plant with a similar ability in Plants vs. Zombies 2, Gloom-Shroom finally returns to their roots in Plants vs. Zombies 3 as an Epic Scrapper plant. Like Plants vs. Zombies, they attack zombies in a 3x3 area.

Their Plant Food ability is Spin Cycle and has them spin in a spiral, damaging all zombies the puffs hit and their Tacobility is Passing Gas, which lets their puffs pass through other zombies.
