Vimpires. They're the worst. I don't like to use the word "hate" but yeah, I hate 'em.

For other uses, see Garlic (disambiguation). Not to be confused with Garlic Drone, an ability for the Cactus class in the shooter games.

Garlic21

Garlic is a recurring character within the Plants vs. Zombies franchise. Garlic is a defensive plant which not only absorb bites, but redirects zombies to the lanes above or below him. In some games, Garlic even has a secondary ability to instantly defeat any vampire based enemy that bites or otherwise harms him.

A plant, Sweet Potato, first appeared in Plants vs. Zombies 2, effectively being the exact opposite of Garlic, bringing zombies from the lanes above or below them into their lane. Shuffle Truffle meanwhile can be compared to a Garlic mixed with Spring Bean, as they both bounce zombies backwards and redirects them.

As of Plants vs. Zombies 3, Garlic has appeared in five games.

Origins[]

Ail

Garlic is based on the plant Allium sativum, commonly known as "garlic," which is a pungent member of the Allium genus (which includes onions, scallions, shallots, leeks, and chives) in the amaryllis family, often used for cooking.

His secondary ability in some games to destroy Vimpires is a reference to the myth that garlic is a weakness of vampires.

Garlic1

In the original Plants vs. Zombies game, as well as all Chinese spin-off games based on it, Garlic is unlocked after beating Level 5-5, being the last defensive plant unlocked in the game.

Unlike the other defensive plants, he has a fast recharge, though absorbs much less, only being able to absorb 400 damage and redirects any zombie that eats him. Garlic's ability makes him pair well with both Starfruit and Gloom-shroom, who can damage zombies from a safe distance due to Garlic.

Garlic has the special trait of absorbing different amounts of damage depending on the zombie, with the lowest being 18 damage from Football Zombie, Dancing Zombie, and Backup Dancer and the highest being 72 damage from Snorkel Zombie.

Plants vs. Zombies 2[]

After Sweet Potato's appearance a year prior, Garlic finally made his long awaited return on September 22nd 2015 in Side B (Part 2) of Neon Mixtape Tour, where he appears as the fourth plant unlocked in the world.

Garlic has the same cost and as the previous game with an additional 200 damage added to his health, but a slower recharge. However, there is a delay in his stunning effect, letting zombies get in extra bites and giving the illusion of him having less health.

Along with this, many more zombies can either destroy Garlic before he can activate his effect or simply ignore it and keep biting on him, such as Pharaoh Zombie and the robotic zombies of Far Future.

A few months prior to Garlic's release in Neon Mixtape Tour, the Chinese-only game Plants vs. Zombies Online released Garlic in what would be their last and unfinished world, the East Sea Dragon Palace.

For whatever reason, Garlic received massive nerfs in this game, costing 75 sun, being only plantable in this world and only having 250 health. His Plant Food effect also differs in this game, stunning every zombie like an Iceberg Lettuce rather than his effect in Plants vs. Zombies 2.

Garlic also appears in the turn-based mobile card game Plants vs. Zombies Heroes as an Event plant in the PvZH Guardian IconGuardian class. He costs 1SunPvZH, has 1StrengthPvZH/5HeartPvZH, has the Team-Up trait, and is a member of the Root tribe.

Like his mainline appearances, when he is attacked, Garlic will redirect the attacker, in this game, always to the lane to the left, unless there is already a zombie in that lane.

Garlic also has a secondary effect, instantly destroying Vimpire and Ancient Vimpire if either of them attack Garlic, a reference to a stereotypical Vampire weakness to the plant.

Plants vs. Zombies 3[]

Garlic3

Garlic's latest reappearance is in Plants vs. Zombies 3 as a Club exclusive Wall plant. Here he costs a simple 1 sun and have the most health he's had yet at 1,000. Once again, he redirects any zombie that takes a bite out of him, making him a more reliable version of Shuffle Truffle.

His Plant Food effect is named Bad Breath which works like his Plants vs. Zombies 2 Plant Food but has a poison effect added to it while his Tacobility is named Garlic Drone which gives a gas cloud which gives him the ability to both block off flying zombies and allows him instantly destroy any Vimpires who bite him.

Trivia[]

GarlicBeta
  • Garlic's original concept resembled a vampire, likely to reference a Vampire's weakness to Garlic.
  • Although he does not appear in Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2, an image of him can be seen on the Stickerbook's model. This is also true with Sun-shroom and Gloom-shroom.
GarlicAS
  • Garlic has a scrapped design meant to be used in the Chinese exclusive turn-based RPG Plants vs. Zombies: All Stars. It is unknown why Garlic was scrapped from appearing in the game.
  • An easter egg with Garlic can be found in Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville. A miniature Garlic can be interacted with in Crazy Dave's Manor by Rux and when interacted, a gigantic Garlic will briefly emerge from the pond in front of the dam near the edge of Giddy Park.
    • The design for both the miniature and gigantic Garlic is taken from his Plants vs. Zombies Online appearance.
      • Interestingly, Garlic in Plants vs. Zombies Online can only be planted underwater, and the gigantic Garlic that appears in this version's design emerges from a large body of water.
