Plants vs. Zombies for Nintendo DSiWare (abbreviated as PvZ:NDSi) is the second time Plants vs. Zombies appeared on a Nintendo console. It was released on on March 14, 2011. The DSiWare version retains some of the content of the DS version, being a similar but less featured (and cheaper) digital counterpart of the Nintendo DS version.

Just like the DS version, the DSiWare version will automatically read the system's username and display it on the main menu, regardless of which system the game is on.

This game is no longer purchasable on the Nintendo DSi Shop due to its closure on March 31, 2017 and it is also no longer purchasable on the Caribbean and Latin Caribbean 3DS family systems eShops on July 31, 2020 due to its discontinuation on those countries.[4] This game is still purchasable on the Nintendo 3DS family eShops in America, Mexico, Brazil, and other countries. However, the eShop on those countries was closed on March 27th 2023.[5] The game can still be redownloaded if you have previously purchased it

Overall, if the player does not care about downscaled graphics, minor glitches, slight performance issues, content such as Versus Mode, Puzzle Mode, Survival Mode, Zombatar, as well as the DS exclusive mini-games Homerun Derby, BOMB All Together! and Air Raid, & the Zen Garden being exchanged for a new exclusive mini-game called Zombie Trap, and has a DSi or any Nintendo 3DS family system, Plants vs. Zombies Nintendo DSiWare is perfect for them.

Differences[]

It shares some of the differences as the DS version such as downscaled sprites, slow framerate when prone to lagging, slight changes in music and sound, and slower processing speed. It also shares the slightly harder difficulty compared to PC. Similar to the iOS versions, you can only upgrade to nine seed slots instead of ten. Some zombies also appear to be stronger, thus some setups that work with other versions will not work (the Last Stand Mini-game, for example). The Jack-in-the-Box Zombie almost always explodes after going four or five squares and Football Zombies run and eat faster.

To take advantage of the DS systems, the mini-game Big Trouble Little Zombie and its 3-5 counterpart have both been replaced by Heat Wave that utilizes the systems' microphone. Like the DS version and unlike other versions, you always have to drag the plants to their spots as the tapping to plant mechanic from the mobile versions is not included. Due to the fact that there are two screens, the Progress meter on gameplay was moved to the top screen with some animated elements added to the Top Screen (such as the close-up view of Zombies and Crow moving on the top screen) and Almanac is structured differently. Zombie Trap is the exclusive mini-game in this version that replaces Zombie Nimble Zombie Quick; in comparison with Air Raid, Homerun Derby, and BOMB All Together! replacing Zombie Nimble Zombie Quick as minigames exclusive to the original DS version.

The lack of content from this version (compared to the DS version) is due to the size limitations of DSiWare games as the DSi system has limited system storage size at that time. Hence, this version does not have Puzzle Mode, Survival Mode, Zombatar (despite the Download page summary claiming it has it and was replaced with the "Help" option to the game's actual digital DSi manual), Zen Garden, and Versus Mode. Due to not having the Zen Garden, Level 5-4 rewards the player with a Bacon instead of a Watering Can. Further differences compared to the DS version include just 1 new mini-game instead of 3 (as both versions have Heat Wave), less achievements, and most notably Zombies on Your Lawn music video being replaced by a lyric roll (which the audio closely resembles to the OST counterpart, minus the Dolphin cry). The same storage limitation applies to other Express/"A Little Bit of..."/equivalent lesser repackaged versions of the DS titles released on DSiWare, relatedly other PopCap DSiWare releases in particular.

To compensate for being less featured, aside from the exclusive mini-game Zombie Trap, the cost of the game is less than the cost of the DS version at that time (costing 800 DSi Points equivalent to $8 compared to the DS version's cost of $19.99). Despite of being available on the eShop for the Nintendo 3DS family systems, those systems only utilize the same limited amount of dedicated system storage size as the DSi for the sake of compatibility.

Achievements[]

The DSiWare version retains only some achievements from the Nintendo DS version, as 5 out of 14 total achievements from the Nintendo DS version was removed. Note that majority of the Nintendo DSiWare achievements are identical to other achievements of different names. The only difference is the names and/or the description of these achievements.

Glitches[]

Seed Packet Glitch[]

All seed packets don't have any pictures on them, but instead will have a line above it, with the certain plants' respective colors (Winter Melon's line is blue, Kernel-pult's line is yellow and green, etc.).

Imitater Glitch[]

On Roof levels, if a player plants a Wall-nut on an imitated potted plant with the potted plant (non-imitated) in the inventory for the level in addition to the Imitater, the Imitater will have a normal icon but will look like a Wall-nut that is partly eaten with a full-health face. It is colored silver in the middle, a dark-brown on the sides, and has "hypnotic" styled red eyes.

Freeze Glitch[]

If a player fills up with the screen with Gatling Peas and Gatling Peas on Lily Pads and protects all of them with Pumpkins in the Last Stand, the game will freeze but the sound effects and background music will keep playing. This glitch is also extremely common in Survival: Endless, especially when the player chooses to employ multiple cob cannons.

Crazy Dave's Permanent Plants[]

On most other versions of the game, quitting and restarting a level will change the three plants Crazy Dave chooses. On the Nintendo DS version (as well as the Nintendo DSiWare version), Crazy Dave's three plants are permanent. No amount of resetting levels will change them.

Minor Graphics Glitches[]

(Note: Most of these small game glitches also apply to the Nintendo DS version of the game.)

  • When a zombie gets killed by the Garden Rake, his left arm will disappear, showing the bone.
  • Twin Sunflowers will not glow before giving you sun.
  • When a left-facing Repeater on any Vasebreaker level shoots peas, the peas appear to the right of the Repeater's mouth. It is possible they appear at the same spot they appear when fired by a normal, right-facing Repeater.
  • If the game is played on 3DS Systems, and a Cattail is placed before a Tall-nut, one of its spikes will rarely glitch out and be slower than usual, and be angled randomly at random times.
  • When played on a 2DS system (and possibly 3DS systems as well), sprites commonly fail to load correctly, displaying as fully black or simply invisible. This can affect coins/diamonds, presents, chocolate, trophies, menu buttons, etc.
  • When a Newspaper Zombie's newspaper is destroyed by fire peas or fumes, the question mark will not appear over the Newspaper Zombie's head when it becomes angry.
    • In some cases, the Newspaper Zombie will become mad instantaneously without pausing, and there's a chance it will walk in place until killed.

Minor Audio Glitches[]

  • During periods of substantial lag, instruments which are meant to trail off will often cut out abruptly instead.
  • Also during periods of lag, many sound effects are prone to cutting off partway through.

Trivia[]

  • The art from the download page in the DSi and 3DS family systems' eShops shows a Zomboni without the Zamboni or the beanie. It's also the same art used for the loading screen of the Nintendo DS version.
  • In the trailer for Plants vs. Zombies DSiWare;
  • Unlike the Nintendo DS version, the DSiWare icon is animated.
    • The animation features a zombie's hand sticking out of dirt shaking a flower.
    • The flower is also slightly different than the one in the DS version icon, having a darker shade of green for the leaves and stem.
  • This version, the DSiWare versions of several PopCap games, and other DSiWare games released before May 2011 was formerly and quietly delisted on the American eShop during January 4, 2021. [6] It was later reversed on January 8, 2021.[7]
