This is a very strong zombie early on. If the player gets the chance to play him, play him immediately. There are very few methods the plant hero will be able to effectively remove him on turn 1, which can give the upper hand in the early game. Giving him health boosts will make him extremely dangerous and difficult to destroy without the use of tricks.
Consider pairing him up with Sumo Wrestler or Terrify, which can move weak plants to his lane so he can activate his ability, or move dangerous plants out of his way so he can survive for longer. Because he is a sports zombie, Team Mascot will be able to boost him each turn in which both are alive.
Later on, however, he is usually very weak when played, as the opposing plant hero can play stronger plants that can outdamage the Arm Wrestler. So the earlier you play him, the more effective he becomes in combat.
One counter is to use superpower tricks such as Solar Flare's signature superpower Sunburn, Grass Knuckles' signature superpower Power Pummel, or Nightcap's signature superpower Mush-Boom. Hothead can also get rid of Arm Wrestler, though better options can be used. If you don't want to play your signature superpower, you can use cheap damaging tricks such as Berry Blast.
Using Bonk Choy is effective on taking out an Arm Wrestler early on, as long as Arm Wrestler did not recently face any other plant. Rose's Goatify will always neutralize Arm Wrestler as it turns him into a 1/1 Goat, getting rid of his dangerous ability in the process. A similar result can be achieved with Transmogrify as it may transform Arm Wrestler into a weaker zombie, but beware, as it may simply change him into another Arm Wrestler as he costs 1 brain, basically wasting the superpower.
If you move Arm Wrestler to a lane that already has plants, he will not receive a boost. Whipvine can easily handle Arm Wrestler, provided he hasn't gained too much health. Sweet Potato can do the same too, but it requires a plant that can take him out with Sweet Potato unless it is boosted.
Bouncing him can simply force Arm Wrestler back into your opponent's hand, removing all of his stat changes. However, it is recommended to bounce him only if he becomes too dangerous, as your opponent can just play him again on an empty lane.
It is highly not recommended to use Shroom for Two against Arm Wrestler as he will activate his ability twice, gaining double the stats, making him more dangerous. Pair of Pears, on the other hand, can take out Arm Wrestler and have one pear survive if he has not been boosted yet. However, if your opponent is Z-Mech, then he can easily pull Bungee Plumber or other tricks to get rid of at least one of the pears, keeping Arm Wrestler alive and allowing him to deal heavy damage for a few turns.

- Some of his character design, especially his voice and black baseball cap, are a reference to the Sylvester Stallone film Over The Top, which centered around arm wrestling.
- Transforming a plant on his lane triggers his ability, since it counts as playing a plant.
- Strangely, he does not activate his ability when Wild Berry moves to his lane.
- When he is destroyed, he appears to punch his own head off.
- His description appears to be an explanation of how he got his muscles.
